A special note from trip organizer and participant Marcia Levinson:

Paperclip Trip–a Religious and Cultural Experience

There are many Holocoust museums in the world and in America, but how did The Paperclip Holocaust Museum wind up in a small rural town in Appalachia?  Only a few people there have ever met a Jewish person, so what happened? How many Philadelphia/ Lower Merion Jews have known a southern person in rural Whitewell, TN?

This is our chance to learn about one another.   The Paperclip trip is a planned religious and cultural experience.  We will visit and learn about the history of the Museum, engage with people at the Middle School, and celebrate Yom Hashoah at the authentic rail car.

We will get a chance to meet and talk with some residents of Whitwell, including visiting a coal miners museum and spending some time speaking and listening to people from this different background and place.

In addition we will visit the Ochs (owner of New York Times) Memorial and learn about Jewish history in Chattanooga.  We will exercise our ability to listen, to empathize and to enlarge our perspective.  What a better world we could have if we can look at its complexities, look at ourselves and develop respect and understanding for those who are different from us.

Hopefully this trip will be a meaningful and memorable trip for all.
