In the summer of 1883, Moses Wilhelm Shapira—archaeological and treasure hunter—arrived in London, claiming to have discovered the world’s oldest Bible scroll. These documents were soon denounced as fake by a French archaeologist. And, that, it seemed, was the end of the story. But in 1947, investigators reopened the case, wondering whether the ill-fated Shapira had, in fact, discovered the first Dead Sea Scroll, decades before the rest.
